Jonker Street, Malacca is a small street located in Chinatown which is North of the Malacca River. It is commonly known as the Jalan Hang Jebat by the locals. Shops are lined along the street, where you will find delicious local street delights, cute souvenirs, unique T-shirts, antiques, galleries and locally made products. Visitors can explore the shops as there are many hidden treasures in the shop houses, and you never know what you might find.
The street wakes up when the night falls, turning into a night market where only pedestrians can access. Cars and motor vehicles are not allowed on the street on Fridays to Sundays. You should come in and soak in the vibrant atmosphere. Street performers will also set up their acts along the streets. One of the performance features an uncle breaking coconuts with his finger. Be in awed by the talented performances by the locals.
Other than the shophouses lining the streets, vendors will push their carts out or set up their stalls on the roads. You will be able to find food stalls, art and craft stalls, souvenir stalls and clothing stalls just to name a few. All types of things are for sale along the streets. Many events are also held along the streets, especially during festive periods. At the corner of Jonker Street, you will be able to find famous pubs and restaurants for you to hang out.
