Perhentian Islands, Terengganu, Malaysia is found on the North-Eastern coast of Malaysia. It is only about 64 km south of Thailand and about 19km off the coast of Malaysia. Perhentian means stopping point in Malay and it is probably the island got its name. The Perhentian Islands was a resting stop for traders and fishermen between Malaysia and Thailand in the early days. Two islands, the Pulau Perhentian Besar and Pulau Perhentian Kecil (big and small Perhentian Island respectively) make up the main Perhentian Islands.

How to get to Perhentian Islands, Terengganu, Malaysia

Travellers can get to Perhentian Islands from the Kuala Besut Jetty. The journey takes between one and a half to two hours by speedboats. Passengers can book their tickets online here or buy the tickets at the Jetty. There is no fixed schedule, and the ferry departs when it is fully occupied. Due to the northeast monsoon, the Perhentian Islands, Terengganu, Malaysia is not shielded by any land area. Thus it is not advisable to visit the island from October to March.

As an island retreat, there are many water sports available on the Isle. There are many diving packages and diving spots to explore. Snorkelling is another favourite activity. The islands offer crystal clear waters and white, pristine beaches, making it a perfect place to catch the rare sea turtle. Travellers can also rent a kayak and explore the numerous nearby islands. Perhentian Kecil is a backpackers haven, where budget travellers hangout. Visitors to can relax at the idyllic Long Beach or visit the quiet Coral Bay to catch the sunset. In contrast, there are many family-friendly resorts on Perhentian Besar. The main beach of Perhentian Besar stretches on the western shore. There are also a few trails available to explore inland where you might spot small animals such as monkeys and monitor lizards.
